Adventures in California

So I've made my way, reluctantly, out to California to visit the boy. So far we haven't rested!

The first day was a trial of getting from Albany to San Franciso without getting frisked by the TSA or losing luggage. It took me a bit longer then expected to get out here given some delays from the snow storm we received in albany the night before my departure. I'll shorten the airport experience to this, I read 190 pages of Bill Bryson's Lost continent. A book about his travels in small town America. So far it's great and really I didn't want to put the book down.

The first thing Rich and I did after we found eachother in the airport was to head straight to In N Out burger. it was delicous. and now I'm addicted. Yesterday we spent ALL DAY walking around the piers of San Francisco. We saw some seal lions, some magic shows and a whole lot of tourist. THE BEST PART of the whole day wasy semi wandering into a Bourdin Bakery. It was amazing, they had the bakery open up so that you could look over the bakers and machinery hard at work below. It was fascinating. I plan to post pictures once I get back and get them uploaded to this site so you'll just have to use google or wait in eager anticipation. We also went out to see Ben Gibbard, an indie rock legend at age 35. it was beautiful.

today, unfortunatly, I had to work, east coast time. ugh. I was up at 5:30am PST to be logged in by 8:30 EST. it was tough and involved lots of coffee. luckily that is something they do not lack out here.

now we're planning a trip up to napa, CA with a bed and breakfast in mind and perhaps a mud bath/hot springs? we'll see.

well thats all for now. more to come!

WFAL

Now that I've been working from an alternate location aka home for about 2 months now I thought it would be a good time to reflect.

pros:
- I get to look outside through a large double window. I see plenty of birds now that I've put up two bird feeders, the weather, when the mail person comes, the daily 12:30 jogger and so much more. I certainly don't miss the alternative of watching who goes to the printer and how many times they do. Actually there is something really relaxing about just getting a chance to look outside and not have it be a metropolis of taxis.
- pjs everyday. Although I usually get dressed by 10am it's quite nice to start the day off in my pjs
- I can make lunch! I don't have to think about what I'm going to bring in and pack it or go to a cafeteria.
- Decorating 'my office' doesn't require me lugging in a large bag to the office or being embarrassed by the things I do put up. right now it's pretty bare as it's not technically my space yet :) I have a letterpress calendar up and a cat bed which leads me to my next pro
- I get to hang out with cats all day. They typically take turns sleep on the desk staring out the window at the birds.
cons
- I want to do other things while I'm here. Once you're in an office you don't easily have the ability go do laundry, wash the dishes, make some bread! etc. it's just not possible. really it just takes me a little more effort to get those 'worries' out of my head and stay focused.
- I feel like I have to be at my desk every second! It my status clicks to away I feel like that is sending my co-workers the message that I am not working and off wasting time. If the same happened while I was in an office it would totally be acceptable whether I was chatting with a friend on my cell phone or at the 'watercooler' or if I ran down to the duane reade to grab a snack. But when I grab a conference call from home I feel like I need to keep the computer right in front of me and always active whether I'm using it for the conversation or not.
- networking. although I hate to use the word it is incredibly difficult to stay in contact with people you don't see everyday let alone meet new people. New potential managers or mentors etc. I have to stay very vigilant in keeping up communications with those outside of my immediate working circle to maintain those relationships.

all in all I'm enjoying the change, from office to home and from city to the burbs.
My next step is to have my home office be a job in which I work for myself :)

Enough Change? Doesn't look like it.

I just found a great site that is trying to make a difference in climate control in the world today. What it does is try to make an estimate on how the current proposals from around the world would effect the future global temperatures as compared to pre-industrial temperatures.

Feel free to grab this widget and post it on your own site. It will update automatically. and please check out the climateinteractive.org website.  And why not throw another one at you just for kicks.

my first TAD

http://thing-a-day.com/
So the idea of thing a day is to make one thing everyday for the month of February with some basic rules. Rules like:
- it must be made on that day, not before, no past projects
- you can't copy anyone else's idea
- it can be ANYTHING
- post a photo
etc.

I'll keep you updated as I make my things! here's 2/1:
